WORLD Receives Nine Awards in State Competition

Lake City SILVER WORLD received a total of nine awards in a variety of advertising, editorial and photography/layout categories at last month’s annual Colorado Press Association Convention in Lakewood, Colorado.
SILVER WORLD competed among weeklies from throughout the state in Class 2 for newspapers with paid circulations between 1,000 and 2,001. Judging was based on entries published between November, 2015, and late October, 2016.
Awards were presented during ceremonies held at the Lakewood Sheraton on Saturday evening, April 22, at conclusion of the press association’s 139th annual convention.
The Lake City newspaper was represented at the newspaper convention by veteran Colorado journalist Charlotte Trego who formerly operated 30-Mile Resort on the Upper Rio Grande. Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper was among the keynote speakers at the press convention.
SILVER WORLD’s five first place and four second place awards included first and second place designations in the editorial category of Best Deadline News Reporting based on its July 1, 2016, account of the annual San Juan Solstice Run and a report in the newspaper’s July 15, 2016, edition on the propane explosion which demolished the Bowling cabin on Gunnison Avenue.
“Strong, thorough reporting” was noted by judges in both deadline news entries, the San Juan Solstice coverage noted as “remarkably in-depth coverage.”
SILVER WORLD was highlighted with first place award for advertisements prepared by Jennifer Rightsell promoting Johnson & Lovegreen’s Climb Elevated Restaurant, together with a second place Best Advertising Campaign award, for a series of ads for the Climb Restaurant.
The newspaper’s annual summer, guide, the Silver Thread, garnered particular praise in the newspaper competition with a first place award for the guide’s editorial content, and second place for Best Advertising Special Section.
contiIn explaining top awards for the annual historic guide to the Silver Thread Scenic & Historic Byway between South Fork, Creede and Lake City, judges noted it is a “particularly attractive piece.” With the exclamation “Wow!,” one judge stated that with the “information-packed” Silver Thread “you could look at it several times and find something new… it is a wonderful mix of historic and new articles, a clear winner.”
Top place editorial awards went to SILVER WORLD in the editorial categories of Best News Feature and Best Health Feature, together with a first place award for Information Graphic based on a line layout of rooms in the new addition to the historic Armory building.
Newspaper reporter Sally Moore received a second place award for Best Business News Feature based on her interview and resulting article in the May 26, 2016, edition of the newspaper with Lake City “Crayon Lady” LuAnn Foty. Judges remarked that Moore’s article was a “Fun read… I couldn’t help but hope for the best for this business owner. I particularly love the little quotes that bring out the business owner’s personality.”
A first place award was also given for WORLD’s March 25, 2016, article by Grant Houston in the category of Best Health Feature on the discovery of concentrations of formaldehyde during renovations of Hinsdale County Courthouse.
“The coverage,” according to judges, “went into depth on how formaldehyde can affect the health of people, as well as keeping the public informed on what was going on in a public building.”
Based on cumulative awards in the 2016 press competition, Sweepstakes Winners among Class 2 newspapers in the state went to Ouray County PLAIN-DEALER in the categories of Advertising, Editorial, and General Excellence, and to High Timber Times, Conifer, Colorado, which was named Sweepstakes Winner for

Among local Class 2 newspapers over 1,000 to 2,001 circulation, Ouray County PLAINDEALER won a total of 18 awards, including first place awards for Best Cover Design, Best Photography Portfolio, Best Editorial Writing, Best Environmental Story, Best Serious Column Writing, Best Humorous Column Writing, Best Newspaper Promotion Advertising, Best Small Space Ad, and Best Classified Page.
Silverton STANDARD & Miner won a total of four award, including first place awards for Best Feature Business Story, Best Editorial Special Section/Glossy, and Best News Page Design.
Among weekly newspapers in larger categories, Class 3, over 2,001 circulation, Gunnison Country TIMES received 12 awards, including first place awards for Best Photography Portfolio, Best Feature Photograph, Best Black & White Ad, Best Newspaper Promotion Ad, Best Large Space Ad, and Best Real Estate Ad.
Pagosa Springs Sun, Class 4, over 3,001 circulation, received Sweepstakes Awards for its Online edition and General Excellence based on 20 awards, including Best Photo Essay, Best Online Breaking News, Best Feature Story, Best Editorial Special Section/Glossy, and Best Deadline News Reporting.
Crested Butte NEWS, also Class 4, won three awards with two first place designations for Best Advertising Special Section and Best Editorial Special Section.
