‘Celebrate’ Honorees Include Citizen of Year, Lifetime Achievement…

Praise and congratulations overflowed at Tuesday evening’s annual ‘Celebrate Lake City!’ awards presentation highlighting superlatives from a variety of Lake City area organizations, including Lake City/Hinsdale County Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year, which went to Scott Beedy, the late enthusiastic civic booster. WEECARE IN LAKE CITY
WeeCare had a wonderful year thanks to the excellent and very dedicated staff, volunteer board members, and support from parents and local citizens. Even though WeeCare faces many challenges the organization continues to provide uninterrupted and quality care to our smallest and most precious community members. This would not be possible without support from so many in the community.
WeeCare would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to those who contributed to the 2018 Holiday Pot Luck Dinner and Silent Auction. Sixteen local businesses and ten individuals generously donated auction items, helping Wee Care raise over $1,600. Such community support helps Wee Care keep its doors open!
WeeCare would also like to thank the Hinsdale County School District Board of Directors and Staff for their continued collaboration, support, and consideration of a future merger.
An exciting new infant program is currently under development at Wee Care, set to begin late this spring. The infant program will provide quality care for infants between the ages of 6 weeks and 1 year.
The volunteer WeeCare board of directors includes Kristen Hartje, Amy Humphreys, Sharon Rogers, Lydia McNeese, and Michelle Martin.
The board of directors would like to give special thanks and recognition to WeeCare Director Sarah Tubbs and Lead Teacher Taylor Nelson. Their dedication to providing loving care has a lasting and immeasurable impact on Lake City children and families.

FRIENDS OF EMTS AND THE SAN JUAN SOLSTICE
This June will be the 24th running of the San Juan Solstice 50 Mile Benefit Run for Lake City EMTs, originally called the Lake City 50.
The great popularity of our race is driven by three things, our incredible back yard, our town and our volunteers. The most common thread, in the answers that we get, in the post race runners survey is how they love our Aid Station volunteers.

Research has shown that summer reading programs enhance the development and retention of children’s reading skills during the school vacation months.
Erin Cavit and her legions of tutors, mostly retired teachers , work tirelessly for 8 weeks every summer helping kids from kindergarten through 6 th grade with reading and math skills.
Erin has organized and implemented this program for 13 years.

HINSDALE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND SEARCH AND RESCUE
The Hinsdale County Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize Dennis Cavit as our Search and Rescue Volunteer of the Year. Dennis has given many years of service to our community by working to organize the search and rescue equipment as well as keeping the vital information we need to conduct effective search missions up to date. Dennis is also frequently called on at inconvenient times to come and coordinate the missions. While he reminds us regularly that he has retired, he still faithfully comes when needed and serves our community in our times of need. We thank Dennis Cavit for all that he does in his role.

The Hinsdale County Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize Tom Carl as our Sheriff’s Office Volunteer of the year. Tom Carl has been a long-standing volunteer for the last several Sheriffs. He has not only been available to be called on for any type of emergency that may arise, he has also diligently given of his time to participate in the many hours of required training to stay current on the skills, laws and procedures that he needs to know to effectively assist the sheriff’s Deputies. Tom Carl’s dedication to this community through his work with the Sheriff’s Office is a shining example of how neighbors care for each other in their times of need. Thank you Deputy Carl for all that you do, and for your willingness to give of yourself for the sake of others.
The Hinsdale County Sheriff’s Office would like to recognize Andy Dozier for the years of service he has given to our community by serving the Hinsdale Sheriff’s Office. Andy Dozier went to the Law Enforcement academy in 2010. And became a Colorado POST Certified Law enforcement Officer. He has s served as a volunteer or part time Deputy since that time. He has responded to numerous types of call outs and emergencies. He has given long hours at unexpected and inconvenient times. He has participated in hundreds of hours of training to improve his skills and to stay current as a law enforcement officer. He has showed up as back up in risky situations to assist the full-time members of the Sheriff’s Office and he has taken on vital roles in the command post during county emergencies. Andy has faithfully taken the on-call deputy role to give full-time staff a much needed evening off. In December of 2018, Andy resigned as a deputy to take a break from the demands and responsibilities of a certified deputy sheriff. We thank him for his faithful years of service and the faithful support he has given to the Hinsdale County Sheriff’s Office.

HINSDALE COUNTY – VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Hinsdale County is honoring Tom Carl as our Volunteer of the Year.
During March’s avalanche emergency, Tom immediately stepped up to help however he was needed. His exhaustive knowledge of Hinsdale County backcountry, snowmobiling expertise and calm demeanor made him one of the most important and reliable resources during that challenging time. It is not an exaggeration to say he was indispensable while the snow was literally coming down on top of us.
Tom has been volunteering with Hinsdale County for decades, as a volunteer reserve officer with the sheriff department and as a member of Hinsdale County Search and Rescue. He’s always on duty when additional officers are needed and is a familiar face at the sheriff’s office when an emergency unfolds.
Bobbi McDonald said it best, “Whenever you need Tommy, he’s there in a heartbeat. There is nothing the guy can’t do.”
Thank you, Tom, for everything you do for Hinsdale County.

HINSDALE COUNTY – LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Charlie Curtis was an incredibly prolific volunteer, giving decades of service to the Lake City Community. During his 40 years in Lake City his volunteer efforts included:
* 14 years with Lake City Fire District
* 9 years as a member of the Hinsdale County Planning Commission
* 3 years on the Lake City Area Medical Center Board of Directors
* 10 years as ambulance driver for Hinsdale County EMS
* Many years as a firefighter with Lake City Fire/Rescue, and member of Hinsdale County Search & Rescue
* Security detail for every Wine & Music Festival (18 years)
* Williams Creek Aid Station volunteer and timer for San Juan Solstice Run
* Lake City Pyrotechnics team member, setting off fireworks on July 4 and New Year’s Eve
And of special note… EMS fundraiser extraordinaire AND Supreme turkey leg cooker of all time.
We could spend hours tonight recalling fond memories and entertaining stories about Charlie. He – literally – had his hands in almost every aspect of Lake City life with his years of construction work, volunteering, building official duties, back country skiing, motorcycle riding, and many after work hours telling stories with friends at the local watering holes.
Charlie will always be a unique and irreplaceable part of Lake City, and now he has joined many of his close friends that will be sorely missed from our community.

Hinsdale County Historical Society, which marked its 45th anniversary in 2018, would not exist if it were not for the dedication and enthusiasm of its volunteers.
Special thanks go to the Society’s Board of Directors – Shawna Shidler, Peggy Bales, Kristie Borchers, Grant Houston, Harvey DuChene, David Flynt and the Society’s newest board member, Glenn Heumann; Administrative Assistants Campo Caceres and Steve Priest; Docent Coordinator Karen McClatchie, and Helen’s Garden Supervisor Alice Attaway Curry, Mette Flynt for her dedication giving walking tours during the summer months, and, of course, the many volunteers who serve as docents during the summer to keep the museum open seven days per week.
Hinsdale County Historical Society’s oldest artifacts at just over 30-million years age are four limestone mining claims on upper Henson Creek between Capitol City and Rose’s Cabin which the Society purchased last month. The claims are the location of one of the Alpine Loop Scenic Byway’s most distinctive landmarks, the towering 44’-tall brick chimney which is known as the Rose Lime Kiln. The kiln and adjacent claims were put up for sale in 2018 and the Historical Society was able to purchase the property thanks to funding from the State Historic Fund and Bureau of Land Management.

INVESTING IN HISTORY AWARD – LAKE CITY DIRT AND THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
2018 and thus far in 2019 have been memorable for Hinsdale County Museum as it continues to broaden its collections. One of the museum’s most challenging — and most sizeable — challenges weighs in at a mere 15-tons and measures 8’ wide by 42’ long with distinctive “duck bill” platforms at either end. It is an 1881 Denver & Rio Grande Railroad narrow gauge passenger car. The car was reconfigured in 1900 to Combination Car 211 which carried both freight and passengers when it used on the Lake City Branch of the D & RG in the 1910s and 1920s.
After many years absence from Lake City, Hinsdale County Road & Bridge Crew assisted in bringing the car home to its permanent new location on the grounds of Hinsdale County Museum last June. Jesse Kendall is heading up the museum’s long-term plans for restoration and refurbishment of Combo Car 211. Fundraisers assisting the renovation include the 2nd Annual “Pub Crawl” on August 1 this summer which will feature three historic speakers in three historic Lake City watering holes.
This year’s Investing in History award goes to the Car 211 project of the Hinsdale County Historical Society with a thank you to the Historical Society board, Road & Bridge crew, Jesse Kendall, and Scott Campbell.

HINSDALE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT
The Hinsdale County School District is pleased to honor one of our best volunteers.

HINSDALE HAUTE ROUTE
Hinsdale Haute Route is having its best winter season ever, with 94 nights booked. However, our old snowmobile was on its last legs.
In a stunning display of classic Lake City generosity and support, a group of community members chipped in and donated enough to purchase a 2019 Skandic 900 cc wide track snow machine!
An incredible work machine:

• great floatation
• powerful 4 stroke engine
• ecological
• long life expectancy
It has kept the system alive and moving forward, toward a refurbishing at the Colorado Trail Yurt and completion of the new Rambouillet Yurt at the new location.

LAKE CITY AREA FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT

This year we want to especially recognize an individual who has spent thousands of hours volunteering his time to Lake City Arts. He directed and acted in numerous plays. He was president of the board for over four years. Lake City Arts would like to give a big thank you to Dan Wampler, our volunteer of the year.

LAKE CITY STINGER BAND
The Lake City Stinger Band would like to publicly thank its volunteer musicians, its board of directors, and its musical directors, without whose contributions, the Band would not exist.
The first performance each year for the band is high school graduation. Live music at such an important event in the lives of our youth is deemed extremely important in marking this milestone in the graduates’ lives.
Performing in the Fourth of July Parade is a really fun time for the band and for the folks who line the streets. Local musicians, as well as visiting musicians who want to join in, have a great time participating. Thanks to the crowd for their cheering!
The Stinger Band congratulates the Lake City Jazz Band on its success in 2018, providing additional local musical events.
Beginning this year, the August Concert, conceived and directed by Mike Pearce, will be under the auspices of Lake City Arts. Stinger Band members will be participating. This year’s concert is August 18 at 3pm. Be sure to attend and support this fabulous live music event.
The Stinger Band invites musicians of any caliber to join our band, whose members volunteer their time and talent to bring live music to Lake City.

LAKE CITY CHOIR
The Lake City Choir has been entertaining audiences and enhancing church worship services for 34 years.
Dr. Harold Parker, then minister of the Community Presbyterian Church, encouraged Claire Jessee to form a choir when she moved here in 1985. Even though he hoped to have a “Presbyterian” choir, it turned out to be a very ecumenical organization singing at all the churches in town and later broadening its scopes to provide an annual 4th of July concert, Gospel concert, Christmas concert, and many other choral occasions.
In Claire’s absence, Janet Potter have both worked with and directed the choir in concert.
The choir has provided a true source of pleasure and satisfaction for its members, as well as a sense of pride at providing entertainment to so many locals and visitors in Lake City through the years.

LAKE CITY CONTINENTAL DIVIDE SNOWMOBILE CLUB
Lake City has over 100 miles of multipurpose groomed trails that weave through the expansive area between Lake City and Creede.
Snowmobilers have a number of starting points, including Spring Creek Pass, Slumgullion Pass, and Alpine Plateau.
The trail system offers a variety of settings, which include meandering through forests, straight shots across plateaus, wide trails that traverse mountainsides, and trails to the tops of mountains with spectacular views of the San Juans.
Thank you to the Snowmobile Club volunteers who mark trails, host the Cannibal Snowshoe Race as a fundraiser, and groom trails together with the Hinsdale County Road & Bridge program.

Our 2018 Volunteer of the Year Silver Shovel award goes to Ben Hake. His tireless work wearing multiple hats is visible in many aspects of our community – from the growth of a year-round economy at the Lake City Ice Climbs Wall to the blooming flowers of the summertime in Downtown Lake City. Ben is working to build a Town Park Pavilion as an outdoor community gathering space for our community. He works as a DIRT director as well – attending meetings, participating in planning and visioning what Lake City could be. Benjamin – your energy and efforts month after month and year after year is appreciated.

LAKE FORK COMMUNITY FOUNDATION
Established in 1994 the Lake Fork Community Foundation promotes and supports the citizens of Hinsdale County.
Our Goals include:
• Youth Support
• Assistance to public, educational, medical and benevolent institutions and the public school
• Care of the sick, aged, and helpless
• Care of needy men, women, and children
• Beautification of the area
• Care and protection of animals
The Foundation solicits and receives donations for specific organizations and for undesignated funds. We act as a clearinghouse and central source agency for both donors and recipients.

Special Award
Scott Beedy joined the Board of the Endowment April 28, 2017 and was named Treasurer shortly thereafter. He also joined the Lake Fork Health Service District board May 21, 2018, and was named treasurer of that board.
Scott brought with him many years of financial experience including 17 years as the chief financial officer of a hospital in Spearman, TX. Aside from the financial knowledge, Scott also had vast knowledge of how a hospital and clinic system should work which was beneficial for the health district in many ways. It is very rare to find someone with this kind of medical business experience in a small town such as Lake City.
Scott was a dedicated and tireless volunteer who always stepped forward to take on any challenge and help with any project. He was a skilled professional and enthusiastic supporter of improving healthcare delivery in Lake City. We were incredibly fortunate that Scott and Becky chose our community for their home.
We are pleased to give this award to Becky, Scott’s wife, in honor of all of the volunteer effort that Scott presented here in Lake City over the past 2 years.

LAKE FORK VALLEY CONSERVANCY
The Lake Fork Valley Conservancy would like to honor the students at the Lake City Community School and the kids at Wee Care for all the work they did this past year at the Hearts and Spades Community Garden. The condition of the garden had gotten quite dilapidated, so we coordinated secondary school kids and their muscles to clean up the area and garden beds, and fix fence to prepare for the season. Then the elementary and Wee Care kids got in there with their spades and enthusiasm to plant, weed, water, and harvest a cornucopia of flowers and vegis! We present a plaque (represented by this certificate) to each institution for their help, along with funding to start garden beds on each campus.
We also want to acknowledge the team of teachers and local volunteers who helped herd cats and keep the garden going during the summer: Jen Reinhardt, Lily Fyler, Caitlin Rhoades, Lori Frech, Taylor Nelson, Henry Woods, Rebecca Kaminski, Tara Ralph, Nikki Pugh, Lydia McNeese and Sarah Tubbs. If we have forgotten anyone, you know we appreciate what you do!
2019 will be a busy year with work at the garden and in our community as we put together our final watershed plan for the Lake Fork and Cebolla valleys. We are also working on International Dark Sky Park designation for our property at the base of the Slumgullion Earthflow. Be part of the conversation! LFVC has depended on volunteers like you for the past 21 years. We thank you for what you do to make our community a grand place to live!

PIONEER JUBILEE WOMEN’S CLUB – 2019 LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Pioneer Jubilee Women’s Club is composed of a varied group of women—full- time and part-time residents—who share a love for Lake City and Hinsdale County. Each of our members has talents and traits that they are willing to share with the club and with the community. However, even a group of talented women needs a good leader to organize and coordinate the efforts of the group. PJWC has been very fortunate to have such a leader—Brenda Rock—and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to recognize her many contributions to our club and to our community with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Brenda first came to Lake City with her husband and his family in 1963. She spent many summers here, commuting from their home in Hutchinson, Kansas. Eventually they built their current home in 2002 and moved here fulltime in 2007.
Brenda served as president of PJWC for 2007 and 2008. She initiated and completed selling the building and joining with Lake City Arts to plan and install a state-of-the-arts kitchen in the Anthony Gallery with some of the money gained from the sale of the building. In exchange, PJWC is now able to use the Anthony Gallery for our activities and the arrangement has benefitted PJWC, Lake City Arts, and the whole community.
Also, during this time, PJWC membership grew to 120 plus members! They also began a very successful fundraiser—-The Painted Furniture Auction—-that raised approximately $24,000, thanks to the hard work and talents of many of the members. With the funds raised from the auction and the money freed up with not having to maintain and insure the Silver Street building, PJWC was then able to donate a considerable amount of money to non-profit organizations in the Lake City community through annual grants.
Brenda further served as a Trustee and advisor on the PJWC board, revised the Bylaws, and continued to work at the 4th of July Hot Dog Booth, bake sale, and garage sales. She also served as president in 2015.

While this is certainly an incomplete list of contributions that Brenda has made to the Pioneer Jubilee Women’s Club and to the Lake City community, it is obvious that Brenda has given generously of her time, talents, leadership, and wisdom. As she says, “I love supporting women and helping children get a good start in life.” We are all very fortunate and grateful that Brenda chose to work for the Pioneer Jubilee Women’s Club and for our community and we are so please to have the opportunity to present her with this award.

The Silver Thread Public Health District has been guided by an appointed Board of Health that represent both Hinsdale and Mineral Counties. This board has demonstrated dedication and enthusiasm like non-other. Ever since January 2017, this board has spent numerous hours developing their understanding of Public Health, how Public Health serves our communities, and what their roles and responsibilities are in terms of guiding the overall direction of those services. They met every month in order to get the new Public Health District up and running and continue to meet at least quarterly. Without them, the efficiency and effectiveness of this combined approach to Public Health would not be possible.

TOWN OF LAKE CITY (HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION, PLANNING COMMISSION, SKI HILL, ICE CLIMBS)
On behalf of Mayor Bruce Vierheller, and the Town Trustees – Jud Hollingsworth, Dave Roberts, Alan Rae, Marty Priest, Richard Moore, and Jeff Heaton, we would like to thank the volunteers who serve on the Lake City Historic Preservation Commission, the Town of Lake City’s Planning Commission and board of adjustments, and the volunteers who annually help with clean-up days at the Lake City Ski Hill.

LAKE CITY / HINSDALE COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
First we would like to introduce your Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors:
Jacqui Wonnacott, Carolyn Hull, Robin Gowdy, Linda Downs, Sara Gutterman, Roxa Hutchins and Sally Moore with ex-officio representatives Sandy Murphy, Susan Thompson, and Jeff Heaton. The Chamber’s new Executive Director is Katrina Kent-Menzies And the Events Coordinator is Drew Nelson. The Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its 65th year of business promoting tourism and economic development in Lake City and Hinsdale County. We stay busy year- round assisting area businesses, planning and implementing special events as well as running the Visitor’s Center. We are always looking for volunteer support and we welcome new and creative ideas!

We would like to take a moment to give special thanks to all the first responders the last few months. Hinsdale County Road & Bridge, Hinsdale County EMS, Hinsdale County Sheriff’s Office, Hinsdale County Search and Rescue, Gunnison County Electric Association, Lake City Area Fire Protection District and Colorado Department of Transportation as well as the many kind and caring individuals. The ability for our community to come together and help those in need has always made this place special.
The Lake City Chamber is proud to honor a crew of volunteers for our Chamber Volunteer of the Year Award. This year we are awarding Alan Rae, Paul Clauss, Fred Stapleton and Denny Brannon for all their hard work in improving the Chamber this summer. The interior was painted, the exterior stained, trees and flowers were planted, flower boxes were made, walkways were built, ditches dug, tables refinished, signs redone and all of this was maintenanced. These guys did SO MUCH, the Chamber looks amazing, so thank you!

The three Citizen of the Year nominees greatly appreciate being recognized, but would like to take this opportunity to give the award to Scott Beedy in memory of all he did for Lake City. Accepting this honor on his behalf is his wife Becky.
Scott was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, friend and proud Lake Citian. We were incredibly fortunate that Scott and Becky chose our community for their home.
Scott shared his love of Lake City with others by starting the Fans of Lake City Facebook page. He did everything he could to encourage visitors and new residents to live the Lake City life, and his true generosity and compassion were evident to everyone he met. He promoted Lake City by showcasing new businesses, sharing Alpine Loop photos, having fun contests, and posting ‘first snow’ videos from his porch. Today the page has more than 14,000 followers thanks to his early vision and enthusiasm.
Scott had vast knowledge of how medical clinics should work after many years as Chief Financial Officer of a hospital in Spearman, Texas. He was a dedicated and tireless volunteer who always stepped forward to take on any challenge and help with any project. He was a skilled professional and enthusiastic supporter of improving healthcare delivery in Lake City, serving as financial advisor on the Lake Fork Health Service District board, and the Lake City Medical Center Endowment Fund Board.

Scott loved this community and showed it in his support of many organizations.
